Biography:
Henry M. "Buzz" Burwell is the International Team leader and a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP where he practices in the fields of international business and trade, business immigration, aviation and defense procurement. He is a member of the Corporate/Securities/Tax Division and supports the Firm's Aerospace and Defense Practice Group and Employment Law Practice Group. Mr. Burwell has more than 30 years of experience in these practice areas and has served as lead counsel in more than 100 manufacturing start-ups in the U.S. and other North American countries. He has extensive experience in representing multinational businesses in a variety of transnational undertakings, including establishment of entities, import and export trade, customs disputes, inbound and outbound investments, defense procurement, and aviation transactions in more than 20 countries. A member of the South Carolina Bar, the Oregon State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar, Mr. Burwell is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Mr. Burwell is a member of the American Bar Association; the American Immigration Lawyers Association and its International Law Section; and the Greenville County Bar Association. Mr. Burwell was a recipient of the Ben Landey Pro Bono Award for 2001, presented by Catholic Social Services of Atlanta. Active in numerous civic organizations, Mr. Burwell is a former chair of Greenville South, Inc. From 1997-98, he chaired the advisory board of the University of South Carolina joint degree program for the International Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees, and has served on the University of South Carolina Upstate School of Business Advisory Board since 1990. Mr. Burwell is the founder and editor in chief of the North Carolina Journal of International Law & Commercial Regulation (1976), and the founder of the International Law Committee of the South Carolina Bar, chairing the committee from 1997-98 and 1990-92. He served as editor in chief of Legal Aspects of Export Transactions, a 1999 publication of the U.S. Department of Commerce; and as editor in chief of Legal Issues for Investors, a 1997 publication of the South Carolina Department of Commerce. Mr. Burwell holds numerous leadership positions in associations of international interest including the Japan America Association of South Carolina (founder and former co-chairman) and the U.S.-Japan Clemson Alliance (executive secretary). He is also a member of the Southeast German American Chamber of Commerce. For many years he served as chair of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce International Committee and he served on the South Carolina District Export Council of the U.S. Department of Commerce (1990-2001). Mr. Burwell was president of the Western South International Trade Association from 1985-86. From 1978-95, Mr. Burwell was Assistant Staff Judge Advocate and Senior Advisor, International Law Division, U.S. Central Command, United States Air Force, where he was responsible for legal sufficiency reviews of international and joint venture procurement contracts for USAF CENTCOM in Southwest Asia comprising 17 countries. He served as general counsel of Pinehurst Airlines, Inc. from 1978-82. Mr. Burwell earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1976. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree in 1976, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1967.
