Leadership Profile

Jolsna John is the Associate House Counsel at Operating Engineers Local Union No. 3, a labour organization representing employees in the construction industry as well as civil service. Jolsna represents approximately 36,000 workers in Northern California, Northern Nevada, Utah and Hawaii. She specializes in non-profit governance and labor relations. When she is not negotiating contracts, representing members in labor arbitration, participating in appeals hearings, training business representatives, and developing the strategic plan for the union, Jolsna devotes her time to the North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA). Jolsna currently serves as President-Elect of NASABA. On July 1, 2011, Jolsna will have the distinction of being the youngest President of NASABA, the first to work exclusively in public interest, and the only one to have served as President of NASABA's charitable arm. Jolsna has served on the NASABA Executive Committee already for two years as the Vice President of Affiliate Relationships (2008-2009) and the Vice President of Community Outreach (2009-2010) wherein she built and strengthened NASABA’s relationships with external entities. Due to Jolsna’s efforts NASABA is now on the official White House invitation list for all things South Asian. Jolsna’s passion is public interest and charitable work. She served as the President (2009), President-Elect (2008), and Secretary (2007) of NASABA Foundation, NASABA’s charitable arm. While in that capacity she developed the Foundation’s Pro Bono Project wherein the Foundation provides small grants to community based organizations throughout the United States for advocacy of the South Asian community in four target areas: domestic violence, immigration, hate crimes and family law. She also served on the Board of SABA-NC (2006-2008), President of SABA-NC Foundation (2007-2008), and Vice President of SABA-DC Foundation (2003-2005). Jolsna is also an active member of the Junior League of San Francisco. Her devotion to South Asian issues developed while obtaining her Bachelors in Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin where she served on the Board of the Indian Students Association and served as conference co-chair for the South Asian Students’ Alliance (SASA 2000 Dallas). Jolsna obtained her Juris Doctorate from American University Washington College of Law and while there she served as a two-year term President of South Asian Law Students Association (SALSA).
